Absolutely! tough to eradicate

“Is the word ‘Absolutely!’ overused?”

“Absolutely!”

Or, for a change of pace: yes.

I first heard someone complain about the Infestation of Absolutelys when John McCain suffered a bad attack during the 2007-8 Presidential campaign. Nearly a decade later, despite frequent spraying, the weed continues to spread.

I think it’s a bit like the over-use of exclamation marks! We don’t want to seem less than passionately engaged! So we employ a kind of grade-inflation, in which a B+ response comes to count as failure!!!

Wouldn’t it be better to avoid these habits, which make our communication lack nuance, and seem childish?

Absolutely!!!!!
